My roommate Don Pyper, on his 2 weeks Canoe trip to the Northwest Territories in the photo,
is a very inspiring spirit who always puts his groceries loosely in the fridge without
bags since he sees potato, orange pepper, tomato, basil, mushroom, and etc that he would
consume everyday to keep his body going as organic forms that are most natural and beautiful just by themselves. They don't go well with

for an engineer, this guy knows heck a lot about

history, politics, and various social affairs. A random chat with him,

I usually get to learn something new, including the fact that

the former governor general of Canada, Adrienne Clarkson,

is 台山人 like him. I used to misbelieve those chinese men in the meat section of

ottawa's 168 chinese grocery store spoke Vietnamese, but only later

did I found out it's actually a 台山話. 一種很像越南話的廣東話.

Gas town is a historical spot that most tour groups would stop by when

they visit Vancouver. Its landmark is an antique clock that emits smoke

and chimes at every full hour, which when happens, tourists would stare

at it with amazements and sometimes even clap at it. Gas town is also

geologically very close to the troubled Downtown East Side (DTES) in which

most homeless people, prostitutions, drug addicts, and poverty of the city

concentrate.

thank you, j & n, for taking me to this lovely trip/adventure in which I have learned how amazing it was to feel like being an integral part of the mother nature, to feel like being a part of the anciently spiritful forest, and to feel like being a part of the beautifully calming, crystal-like water. you guys were lovely company to have in a trip that requires intimate contact with the nature in that you don't mind getting your hands and shoes dirty and messed up as long as you get to taste the freshness of the breathe of the most primitive forest, to see the graceful trajectory of an eagle soaring high over us, and to put the wooden sign of your beloved club name on the big white rocks by the waterfall, which is also our hiking destination, so that it might make a meaningful enough photograph.

Went to Mrs. Pang's yesterday and she gave me tons of freshly picked flowers

from her backyard as well as a grey vase, cuz i told her that she is giving me

more flowers than the number of vessels, glasses, mugs, beer cans,

wine bottles, and whatever else that can be used to hold them in my house.

And this is the new haircut she just recently got from one of her past student.

She jokingly told me she was feeling quite unsure when she sat down inhe salon where

the student works cuz he has only one year's experience. However, I know by

heart that even if this student has no experience or whatsoever but a passion

and dream for becoming a hair stylist, Mrs. Pang would have asked him already for a hair cut.

Indeed, she is truly a god-sent, for everyone of her stuents, old or new,

and yes, including me.

going for a ride or taking a stroll in Stanley Park in a beautiful spring day is such a

treat for Vancouvourite. Stanley Park, sitting right next to downtown Vancouver

surrounded by the mountain views and ocean bay, is a great manifestation

of the charm and essence of this one of the most livable city in the world-

urban living in natural landscape. i've got to say, getting to live in such a city

is really quite a bless, except during the ten out of twenlve months

of rainning a year of course.

weren't sure if they are sibilings or friends, but it shoudn't matter, as i believe

that the 情誼 between every human beings are all unique and independent

such that they shouldn't be categorizedly bounded by the title that bear within.

So there they are, lying on top of each other, holding hands, rolling off the

green hill in laughters. the laughs were so innocent, the two were seemingly

so comfortably close, the pure bond and deep sense of closeness need not to

be spoken out, but were perceived so vividly, i was touched.

and there they are again, climbing back to the top of hill and roll down on each

other and burst into laughter everytime while they go down.....

i stood, there and watched them climb up and roll down, again and again ...

trying in vein to remember if i ever felt such closeness in life.

NEW YORK, USA, 24 April 2007 –

Each year, between 350million and 500 million people are infected

with malaria, and 1 million die from the disease. Malaria accounts for

one death every 30 seconds in Africa alone.

Though the challenge to make a significant impact in endemic countries

is daunting, all is not lost as UNICEF, its partners and governments

gather to rally the world for Africa Malaria Day on 25 April.

For 2007, the annual observance will focus on the need for global partnerships

to reverse the spread of malaria in Africa – in hopes of eradicating the deadly

disease, which is crippling so much of the continent’s youth.

Devastating a continent

It was not so long ago that malaria was a worldwide scourge.

Medical and social innovations were able to eliminate the disease

in some areas, but malaria is still devastating many parts of the

world – especially sub-Saharan Africa, where up to 90 per cent

of all malaria fatalities occur.

In much of Africa, malaria strains already overburdened health

systems. The majority of cases occur in children under the age of

five. Malaria-infected pregnant women are also at risk of contracting

anaemia, putting their lives and those of their unborn children at

risk.

In addition, weakness caused by the disease in adults can

severely impair their ability to work, limiting the means of livelihood

for families and communities, and perpetuating the cycle of poverty.

malaria-bearing mosquitoes.

Resources for the futureMalaria is deadly, but there are

ways to treat it and tools to prevent it. At a cost of just

$10 each, for example, insecticide treated bednets (ITNs)

have been shown to reduce malaria deaths by up to 20 per cent,

with each net lasting up to five years.

UNICEF has been a major proponent of the use of ITNs

to fight malaria, funding the procurement and distribution

of these lifesaving nets across Africa. The organization has

also played a key part in the Roll Back Malaria campaign to

heighten public awareness about the importance of fighting

this disease.

Changes in health policy at the country level are also opening

doors to the use of anti-malarial drugs and combination therapies

to treat those who have already been infected.The treatments

are available and the education is there. What are needed now

are the resources. Africa Malaria Day 2007 is a day for the world

to speak with one voice, and the message is clear: Yes, malaria is

deadly, but it is also preventable

To me it makes a lot more sense to use our resources to deliver such cost-effective and

readily realizable cure to those in desperate need rather than blindly throwing hundreds and

thousands of millions to findingthe magic cure for the newer diseases that are more complicated

and difficult to treat such as AIDS. Not that AIDS is less immenent of an issue it's just that those

philanthropists gotta realize that if indeed the purpose of their charity is to save/help lives, and

not to become the world's most famous funder for advanced medical research which would

perhaps serve to earn them a Nobel Price Award in the end rather than saving more lives NOW.

Another example of pragmatic and effective solution to help the AIDS problem is, not by feeding

African inflicted magic curing pills, but giving and allowing African men and women free and

easy access to condems has long been known to be , by far, themost effective method to combat

the AIDS pandemic in Africa. But sadly the reasons why theuse of condem in Africa is still so low

are 1. Bush government's boycott (as this administration thinks that African people should rely

on "abstinence" instead of using condem to protect themselves); 2. African womenoften

wereforced to not use condems by their male partners.

寫了十幾個劇本　．．．在中國設計了一些房子　在報紙雜誌寫了二十多萬字的評論文章　
到了一些地方旅行看了二百多本書　四百多套電影電視　換了十部手機　上了兩千多小時的網　
喝了三千多升的水　是的　這十年我活得很充實很憤怒很快樂很悲哀很失落很美麗　我變了　
白頭髮開始多了　體重也增多了十多磅　我身邊．．．
我這種得罪人多稱呼人少的性格這十年都沒有變過　我也不想改變也不會改變　

我悲觀但我不會消極

我對香港中國和世界的未來都是悲觀的　現在的資本主義制度將會引領這個文明

舉一個我自己發現的例子不知道大家是不是知道台灣品質最高的出版品之一天下雜誌
的刊名取得就是國父禮遇大同篇裡的大同我其實是透過它的英文翻譯才了解這兩個字的涵義
its translation is "common-wealth", and i actually found this translation more intuitive than
its original words in Chinese, thanks to my poor command of Mandarin.

to me the word common-wealth is no doubt a socialist idea. but i never recalled anyone ever mention Dr. Sun Yat-Sen was actually a leftist. and you know what else? his name is given by his Japanese friends when he was exhiled in Japan. Cuz middle mountain does sound like a japanese name.

If an art work is created to satisfy a market, a group of customer, or your boss
is that not real art?

Are only the lonely artists are the real artists?
Are artists who take on commercial work not real artists?
I think a lot of people interpret artists as too much of a sacred role who must possess some kind of high ideal and believing only what he sees and what he acknowledges is art . On the contrary I happen to believe everyone can be an artist of his/herself thru learning of more sensitive and subtle sensation they might have been experience everyday throughout their life, appreciating the beauty of a flake of snowfall, the changing of leaf color in the autumn, the breath of a tree, the marks on your mother's aging face skin, when a mother dog gives birth to her new born poppies and how she licks them at the first sight, and many more.

Art is indeed about appreciating, refining, and perceiving the subtlety. Art is not just doing your own work that makes you happy or content and without giving regard to the world that you are in.

so what is art?

it was only a week ago when i saw almost an exactly same image in eric's blog when i took the
picture above. frankly when i first saw it in eric's blog, it was a bit hard for me accept the possibility
that the sub woods could one day looked so different from its regular appearance, like a fairytale scene.

a week later, one night in the late November, it came the first snow of the year in Vancouver; it
snowed heavily that night. the next day, i woke up and took a walk around the
campus covered in sheerly pure whiteness. I found myself alive inside the fairy tale that i saw in
eric's blog a week ago.

i lomoized some photos using photoshop which were to be posted
today. but at the end i still find that i like this original photo more than
any other edited ones (by me of course) no matter how much more attractive
they were. maybe i'll post them tomorrow. they are kind of interesting.

i learned a lot of interesting things about photoshop today thanks again to
LE especially the instructors: Eric, Chord, Jerry, and Paulu.
I am not sure if I have really gotten every items presented today but
i am sure i'll remember how to calibrate the color of a photograph
using the white test tube icon thingy
and which 補習班老師 i should hire when my kids in future need help in school work ;)

The reasons you might want to step backwards to manual focus lenses are:

1.) Lower cost

2.) Smaller size and lower weight.

3.) Faster f/stops ideal for use with slides hand-held in low light, also with lower size, weight and cost compared to zooms

4.) Standardized 52mm filters. You can have every lens from 20 mm to 200mm, including PC shift and macro lenses, take the same 52mm filters.

5.) Much better mechanics. The manual lenses are works of mechanical art with their very high quality metal construction and flawless precision. The focus rings can be operated with a single finger and work at all temperatures. The manual lenses feel much better than AF lenses when used manually.

6.) Easier focusing. The AF lenses are a little skittish when focused manually, since they are designed for speed on AF cameras. By comparison the manual lenses are a joy to focus by hand. Also fixed lenses are easier to focus manually, since zoom lenses focused manually usually focus too slowly at wide and too fast at tele.

a lovely garden store on 10th ave. i was a bit shy or nervous should i say when taking
this picture. I recalled I constantly looked inside the store to make
sure that no one was about to unleash their
dogs as I composed the frame.

i like this photo a lot, cuz the object itself is very interesting.
i know it might seem like nothing and boring but i like the look of it
and the idea of the making. i am gonna call this one a freestyle for the
category C for the apparent reason. I am also attempting to push
this for qualifying as an Autumn photo- my theme for category A, for that it's
taken during the Autumn. LOL

Ok, i actually realize i want to call this photo for
category B competition as well since today's topic
is "攝影是.." i personally think
photography is the absolute manifestation of one's personal
experiences and perceptions.
Therefore, to me it's all about learning the spirit of expressing what
you believe in
and what you feel for even when
no body else in the world would give a damn.

fresh tomato was taken back in 2004 spring if my memory served
me well. I like to eat tomatoes fresh especially when they are
nicely riped. it has this unique 爽口ness and its sweetness
is very 不膩 (pardon my lazy use of mixed
languages) if you know what i mean.

yes, it has always been my favourite fruit, second to none,
except the taiwanese papaya and the huge ass sweet
碰柑 during their season. the special thing though about
fresh tomato is that it's one of the very very few food
that i can brag to my family and friends in taiwan because
the ones here are actually better than what they have
on the fruit kingdom of taiwan

I like its crispy green look and the elevating of hot air.

　現在多出來的也不行在養了

理由:
１．為了迎接奧運　減少和避免狂犬病　
２．減少流浪犬和狗的戶外大小便　影響市容

反應:
１．中產階級　反彈激烈　認為這是宇宙霹靂最懶惰最沒人性的管理狗的方法
２．愛狗人士　捨不得愛犬　只好搬出北京城外郊區處

this is quite a news and policy that i heard today. it made me think quite a both
about respect for life and about the way how public policy is made in different
place different systems of government and its pros and cons.

daryl is a super cool dude who does things always
so systematically and efficiently. i have a lot to learn from him.

he will be a prof one day i have the feeling.

there is this small path across street from the korean

grocery shop. walking in for for about 5 minutes

there is a somewhat hidden but gorgeous residential

area with beautiful trees with dark and tall trunk neatly

aligned along the two sides of sidewalk extending

beyond the furthest point the eye sight can reach.

Day 18 → Autumn's Shadow

[Autumn: Main Mall, UBC]

I always found this building kind of neat. Its wall is uniquely white and clean,
like fish belly. Its second floor has this long chain of big silver modern windows,
some are open , some are not. These differently but trimly positioned windows
reflected sunlight in various angles that when seen as you walked down the Main
Mall, resemble fish scales that swim through the sun light.

i had a quite a full day, kind of. woke up before the 7am alarm went off, shot two
photos of 730am sky with the cheapest Canon digital camera available in
market, outcome was quite good however, to me at least. then i jumped
into the (his mother's cold) ubc pool at 740am. made to the first class on time, something
i wasn't able to accomplish for quite a while. but i fell asleep throughtout.
took off from school to get a haircut at 10th ave. ABC photolab at 4th ave. after
getting of from Sasamat stop, on the way to the barber's i finished a new roll of
24-exposure film. saw a warm and cozy looking restaurent called Burgoo, shot
some pictures at a leaf on its outdoor patio table, plants from its neibouring garden store,
the wooden 扛棒 of a veterinary clinic couple stores down.....etc. dropped off a
slide film and at the time an out-of-no-where thought hit me, i asked the lab to
make a negative film of some beautifully saturated red leaves fallen on the black
mud that i posted a few days ago here into an 8x11 enlarged photo. looking forward
to pick it up next week. will mount it onto a styrofoam board, hang it on a nice spot
in my room. i want to listen to jazz and look at this photography from my sofa when
i get drunk next time. ate a strawberry sundae in McDonald, together with a big Mac
meal at 3:30pm. l came to the 4pm tutorial ten minutes late, extremely under prepared.
however i felt i definitely had to loosen up myself before entering the room with nothing
prepared, so i took a piss in the buidling's toilet. but somehow, i forget how,
miraculously i managed to make the entire class of about 80 students to paid
attention at me and laughed for the first time. i actually get the feeling that they were really
interest in what i said and didn't notice that i didn't really understand the
material myself. perhaps my randomly improvised crap was better than the real stuff the
instructor gave me. it was almost entirely dark when i walked out the building at 5:25pm,
but the agronomy road under the deep blue sky and warmly lit street lights was
too gorgeous, i put the slr on the pavement and groveled my entire frontal body
against the pavement floor with two legs tied straightened so that my eyes can
get down to the height of the viewfinder. as i was down on the pavement
manuevering my face in an attempt to put my eyes on the viewfinder window, two
grey hair old men walked by and smiled. came home and finally got the intel-
funded research project that i was assigned to started, supposingly the most important piece
of work in my two years here, which really should have been started off a month ago.

and till now, i still haven't showered or ate.

quite a full day........, kind of.
probably would have felt even fuller had i ate my dinner.

Two weeks ago it was the most beautiful UBC campus I have seen so far.

I witnessed the process of a huge fog covering UBC campus in less than

10 minutes while walking towards the electrical building on saturday.

這霧舖天蓋地的滲入整個校園所有可以看得到的空間現在回想起來

走在路上超過50公尺的視野除了漫天大霧是什麼都看不見的

這份低能見度在空間上將整個校地作了精緻的視野切割每走五十公尺

就可以來到兩分鐘前完全看不透的前方每一切割讓眼前的物景從世界的雜亂紛擾中

獨立出一個只屬於它們的專有呈現空間

一個微妙柔和落英繽紛的隱誨空間.

a space with a infinity of resolution, and an absolute depth of field between the seen

and the unseen that only the mother nature is capable of producing.

And this space, has the name of

Autumn Haziness.....

Since the 4 rolls of new prints are still sitting in Superstore and another 4 rolls of finished films sitting on my desk, I went dig out some old photographs from the past. This lif is phtographed in the very well known Gatineau Park in the Ottawa and Hull area. I heard there are many many truck loaded( i mean bus loaded) of American tourists came up to this park i
n every year's autumn to sight seeing the changing color of the maples. Because up here the temperature drops lower during the night and that favours the anthocyanin formation producing bright red in mapels. It also helps the break downs of chlorophyll and the disappearing of the green pigments so that the yellor to orange colors would become more visible and give the leaves part of their autumn splendor.

Thank you, chord, rufi, matcha, SL, thisummerci, jeffc, little N, cat, and my sweet fyl64, for your encouraging feedbacks and for making sound from your scuba deep down there. I think I had been driven extremely cranky by the overwhelming work load yesterday and was in a very gloomy state during the course of the explosion of my liver. But I will make sure I go buy some pig 肝 this weekend to have it replenished. =P

I am participating the November event, Photoblogging Competiton, held by the coolest club, Literature Etc.,
that I have ever met. In this competition, each participant has to post a photo everyday on his/her blog continuously
throughout the month of November. I opted to do category A which is posting photos related to one single theme that the participant has selected and the theme I chose is "Autumn". It's because I want to exploit the fact that I have already taken
about 4~5 rolls of negative films, which are still undeveloped/under developing, since the beginning of October for my own entertainment and a lot of them are trees, leaves, and objects or scenes I encountered around campus. I always had a very positive inclination towards trees and regard them as one of the most beautiful and spiritual living being that I have seen and UBC just happened to have a campus filled with vast amount of greens that are really neat. I therefore just wasn't able to help taking this advantage to carve down the versatile expressions of trees and leaves on my films during the months of Autumn.
